本校ALTのカーリーと留学生のジャズミンさんが千歳を自転車で巡りました！

アメリカ・アラスカ州・アンカレジ市のダイモンド高校からの留学生であるジャスミンさんは千歳高校に新しく加わった11年生、アメリカでいう「ジュニア」です。千歳に来てまだ2週間ほどなので、学校の4日間の定期試験には参加しませんでした。その代わりに、ずっと自習に励んでいました。そこで試験最終日、少し勉強から離れて「姉妹都市」千歳のことをもっと知ってもらえるように、一緒にサイクリングの冒険に出かけました！

地図と自転車を準備して、まずは彼女がこれからよく訪れそうな場所を巡りました。北ガス文化ホール、グリーンベルト、そして千歳駅です。その後、まちライブラリーに立ち寄り、図書カードを作りました。本好きなジャスミンさんは、早く本棚を見て友達と一緒に勉強するのを楽しみにしています。

次はモリモト本店へ。千歳名物のハスカップスイーツを味わいました（彼女にとって初めての味！）。それから千歳神社や青葉公園へ。祭りの名残のお花を眺めたり、公園のサイクリングロードを楽しんだりしました（安心してください、熊はいませんでした！）。ジャスミンさんは「アラスカ州アンカレッジにあるキンケイド・パークに似てる！」と嬉しそうに話してくれました。

ランチはクレープ屋さんで軽く済ませ、千歳川沿いを通ってサーモンパークへ。そこでインディアン水車を見学し、なんと産卵シーズン前にもかかわらずサケの姿を発見！そして旅のハイライトは、道の駅でのくじ引き。中くらいの大きさのカワウソのぬいぐるみを見事に当てて、自転車の前かごに入れて帰りました！ 最後は小川農場でひまわりを眺め、ソフトクリームを食べて締めくくり。

道中では千歳の町の人たちが驚きつつも笑顔で手を振ってくれ、私たちも笑顔で応えながら楽しみました。きっとジャスミンさんもすぐに千歳に馴染むと思います。きっと私と同じように、この街を大好きになってくれるはずです！

Jasmine is the newest 11th grader, or “Junior” as we describe them in the U.S., at Chitose High School. She arrived in Chitose only two weeks ago, so she didn’t participate in the high school’s four-day exam period. Instead, she was doing an awful lot of self study. So on the final day of exams, we thought she might like to take a break from studying to learn more about her sister city, Chitose.

Equipped with a pair of bikes, a map, and a determination to get to know Chitose, Jasmine set out with me for an adventure. First, we looked around some places we thought she might visit a lot – The Kita Gas Culture Center, the Green Belt, and Chitose Station. Then we stopped by Machi Library to sign her up for a library card. Jasmine loves reading so she is excited to browse the shelves and study there with her friends soon.

We stopped by Morimoto Honten for some haskap treats since Jasmine had never tried the flavor. Then we were on to Chitose Shrine and the Aoba Park area. We enjoyed looking at the flowers leftover from the Shrine Festival, and Jasmine was really excited to bike around the trails of Aoba Park (don’t worry, no bears!). She remarked that it felt a lot like Kincaid Park, a place in Anchorage, Alaska she goes to often for fresh air and nature.

We stopped for a quick lunch at a crepe shop, then made our way along the Chitose River to the Salmon Park. There we saw the Indian Water Wheel in action – there was even a salmon sighting even though the spawning season hasn’t started yet. Then, for the most exciting part of the trip, Jasmine tried her luck with a lottery game at the roadside station and won a medium sized stuffed otter which she promptly placed in her bike’s front basket! Finally, we visited Ogawa Farm to see the last of the sunflowers and enjoyed some soft cream to end a great day!

Along the way we saw many townspeople in Chitose who always seemed surprised but happy to see us. We were waving back and having fun, so I think Jasmine will fit in just fine. If she’s anything like me, she’s going to love it here!
