Happy Halloween!

The English Club has an annual tradition of carving Jack-o'-lanterns during Halloween week! We buy our pumpkins from a local Chitose farm, Kaneko Farm (かねこ農園, @dorisho31), whose staff kindly deliver them to the school. Then we carry the heavy pumpkins up to the Language Lab on the fourth floor, and the carving begins!

First, we cut a lid in the top of each pumpkin. For most English Club members, this is their first time carving a Jack-o'-lantern, so there's always some surprise at just how slimy and wet the inside, or "guts," of a pumpkin can be. Some students aren't fans of the smell, either. Personally, though, it's very nostalgic and reminds me of my childhood! Haha.

In past years, we've collected the pumpkin seeds, washed them, roasted them in the oven, and sprinkled them with salt for a tasty snack. Unfortunately, we were a little short on time this year. Hopefully, we can bring back this tradition next year!

Next, we design faces for our Jack-o'-lanterns. There always seems to be a trend in the types of faces people carve each year. This year's group went the traditional route, creating some very cute and occasionally spooky faces. There's also a familiar character in the mix: Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas!

Finally, we brave the cold and carry the pumpkins back outside, proudly displaying them near the school entrance. They look as though they're greeting every student who walks by with a cheerful "Trick or Treat!"

Happy Halloween to all Chitose High School students, staff, friends, and family!
